Gemini vs ChatGPT (2026): Plans, Limits and Which to Pick

Short answer (October 2026): Gemini and ChatGPT both cost about $20 a month for their main paid plan. Pick ChatGPT if you want the best free plan and one app for chat, research, images and voice. Pick Gemini if you live in Gmail, Docs and Sheets, want lots of storage, or want video creation in the same plan. Neither is better at everything, so the right choice depends on what you do most.
This guide compares the two on what matters when you choose: price, free plans, models and real tasks. We checked both against Google's plan pages, Gemini's release notes and current pricing guides in October 2026. Plans change often, so check chatgpt.com/pricing and gemini.google/subscriptions before you pay.

Which main plan is better value? If you already pay for Google storage, Google AI Pro is hard to beat, because the $19.99 includes 5 TB of storage and YouTube Premium Lite. If you don't care about the extras, ChatGPT Plus at $20 gives you a very complete AI app.

Free Plans: The Biggest Practical Difference
If you don't want to pay, this is the part that matters most.
ChatGPT Free: everyday text chat is unlimited, within OpenAI's abuse rules. Limits still apply to reasoning models, image creation, file uploads and deep research. The free plan may show ads.
Gemini Free: since October 9, 2026, free users get Flash-Lite, Google's lightest model, with a 32K-token context window. It's fast and fine for quick questions, but weaker on hard reasoning and long documents. Google still gives free users a lot of features: image creation, Canvas, Gems, Gemini Live voice chats, Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM), and since October 29, creating and editing documents, spreadsheets and slides right in the chat. Deep Research is included but may be unavailable at busy times.
What this means for you:
- If you want the smartest free answers, ChatGPT Free is ahead right now.
- If you want the most free features, Gemini Free has more tools, but a lighter model behind them.
- Many people use both free plans: ChatGPT for thinking, Gemini for Google-connected tasks.
Is Gemini Better Than ChatGPT?
For some tasks, yes. For others, no. Here is where each one is usually stronger.
Gemini is usually stronger at:
- Working inside Google apps. On paid plans, Gemini sits in Gmail, Docs and Sheets and can use your emails and files.
- Very long documents. Google AI Pro gives a 1M-token context window, so you can upload long reports, books or many files at once.
- Video and images together. Paid plans include Flow credits for video creation, plus image creation on every plan.
- Value bundles. Storage and YouTube Premium Lite come with the paid plans.
ChatGPT is usually stronger at:
- The free experience. Unlimited everyday chat on a stronger model than Gemini's free plan.
- Doing many tasks in one app. Voice chats, image creation, deep research, custom GPTs and ChatGPT Work for longer tasks.
- Following detailed instructions in everyday writing. Many users find it more predictable for structured, step-by-step answers.
Benchmark scores change every few weeks, so we don't rank them by scores. The best test is your own work: try the same task in both and compare.
Which One to Pick, by Use Case
Students
Start with ChatGPT Free for studying and explanations. Add Gemini Free if your school uses Google Docs and Drive, or for Gemini Notebook, which turns your notes and PDFs into summaries and study guides. If you pay, check for student offers first, since both companies run them from time to time.
Writing and editing
Both are good. ChatGPT is easier for quick drafts and rewrites. Gemini is handier if you write in Google Docs and want help without copying text back and forth.
Research
Both have Deep Research, which reads many sources and writes a report with links. Gemini can export reports to Google Docs. See our comparison of AI research tools. Open the cited links before you rely on any claim.
Coding
ChatGPT has Codex, a coding agent included with paid plans. Gemini has the free Gemini CLI, plus Jules and Antigravity with higher limits on paid plans. Both are capable, and many developers try both. Our Copilot CLI vs Gemini CLI comparison covers the terminal tools.
Images and video
For images, both are strong on every plan. For video, Gemini is the pick, because Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra include monthly Flow credits. See Midjourney vs DALL-E vs Gemini Imagen for image tools.
Work apps
Pick Gemini if your company runs on Google Workspace. Pick ChatGPT if you work mostly in Microsoft 365 or switch between many apps. Here's how to use Gemini in Google Docs and Sheets.
Should You Pay for Both?
Most people only need one.
- Stay free if you use AI a few times a week. ChatGPT Free as your main tool, Gemini Free for Google tasks and images.
- Pay for one if you use AI every day. Pick ChatGPT Plus for the best all-round AI app, or Google AI Pro if you use Google apps and want the storage.
- Pay for both (about $40 a month) only if AI is central to your job.
