Claude vs ChatGPT (2026): Prices, Limits and Which to Pick

Short answer (October 2026): Claude and ChatGPT both cost $20 a month for their main paid plan. Pick ChatGPT if you want one app that does everything: voice, images, deep research and unlimited everyday chat, even on the free plan. Pick Claude if most of your work is writing, long documents or coding. Neither is better at everything, so the right choice depends on what you do most.
This guide compares the two on what matters when you choose: price, usage limits, models and real tasks. We checked Claude's plans on Anthropic's pricing page and ChatGPT's against current guides in October 2026. Plans change often, so check chatgpt.com/pricing and claude.com/pricing before you pay.

| Main paid plan | Plus, $20/month | Pro, $20/month ($17/month billed yearly) |
| Top models on the main plan | GPT-6 advanced reasoning | Opus 5.5 |
| Power-user plans | Pro: $100, $200 or $500/month | Max: $100 or $200/month |

Prices are US prices. Some countries get local pricing.
Which main plan is better value? At $20, both are fair. Claude Pro is cheaper if you pay yearly ($17 a month). ChatGPT Plus gives you more features in one place, like image creation and voice.

Usage Limits: The Biggest Practical Difference
Limits decide how often you get stopped mid-task, and the two work very differently.
ChatGPT: everyday text chat is unlimited on every plan, Free included, within OpenAI's abuse rules. The limits that still run out are on reasoning models, image creation, file uploads, deep research and Codex. Paid plans raise those limits.
Claude: every plan has a session limit that resets every 5 hours, and paid plans add a weekly limit on top. Claude counts how much work each message takes, not how many messages you send. Long chats, big files and the top models use up your allowance faster. Pro gives at least 5 times the Free usage. Max gives 5 or 20 times the Pro usage.
What this means for you:
- If you chat a lot with short questions, ChatGPT's free plan will rarely stop you.
- If you send long documents or code, Claude handles them well, but you may hit the 5-hour limit on Free and sometimes on Pro.
- On Claude's paid plans you can turn on usage credits to keep going after a limit, and pay for the extra.
Is Claude Better Than ChatGPT?
For some tasks, yes. For others, no. Here is where each one is usually stronger.
Claude is usually stronger at:
- Writing that sounds natural. First drafts often need less editing, and it follows tone and style instructions closely.
- Long documents. It stays on track across long files and conversations. The newest models support up to 1 million tokens of context on paid plans.
- Coding in real projects. Claude Code works directly in your codebase and terminal.
ChatGPT is usually stronger at:
- Doing many kinds of tasks in one app. Voice chats, image creation, deep research, custom GPTs and ChatGPT Work for longer tasks.
- Free use. Unlimited everyday chat makes the free plan the easiest to live with.
- Quick, short content. Social posts, headlines and fast answers.
Benchmark scores change every few weeks, so we don't rank them by scores. The best test is your own work: try the same task in both and compare.
Which One to Pick, by Use Case
Students
Start with ChatGPT Free. Unlimited everyday chat covers most studying, and you can add Claude Free as a second opinion for essays. If you study a technical subject and want stronger reasoning, ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro are both worth $20.
Writing and editing
Claude is the usual pick for essays, reports, emails and anything where tone matters. ChatGPT is a close second and good for short copy. See our deeper comparison of Claude vs ChatGPT for writing.
Coding
Both have strong coding agents: Claude Code and Codex. Many developers keep both and switch when one gets stuck. Claude Code needs Pro or higher, and heavy coding sessions are the most common reason people move to Claude Max.
Research
ChatGPT has Deep Research, which reads many sources and writes a report with links. Claude also searches the web and works well with sources you upload. Open the cited links before you rely on any claim.
Images and voice
ChatGPT. Claude has no built-in image generator. ChatGPT has image creation and voice chats on every plan, with higher limits on paid plans.
Work apps (Microsoft 365, Google Workspace)
Both work inside Microsoft 365, and Claude also works in Chrome on paid plans. If your company uses Google Workspace, Gemini may fit better: see Gemini vs ChatGPT. Our ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini guide covers all three.
Should You Pay for Both?
Most people only need one.
- Stay free if you use AI a few times a week. Use ChatGPT Free as your main tool and Claude Free for writing.
- Pay for one if you use AI every day. Pick ChatGPT Plus for breadth, or Claude Pro for writing and coding.
- Pay for both ($37 to $40 a month) only if AI is central to your job and you want a second model to check the first.
The simplest test: use both free plans for one week on your real tasks. The one you keep opening is your answer.
