Turn Off Data Training and Clear Your History
The big AI tools let you control some of what happens to your chats. You can often stop your conversations from being used to train the model. You can delete your history. You can set chats to auto-delete. Most people never touch these settings because they do not know they exist.
This lesson walks you through the controls in ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude. One important note first. These apps change their menus often. The names and steps below are accurate as of mid-2026, but settings move. If a label is different on your screen, look for words like "data," "privacy," "activity," or "improve the model," and you will find the right place.
What You'll Learn
- How to stop each tool from training on your chats
- How to delete past conversations and set auto-delete
- What "off" really means, and what it does not fix
- The temporary or incognito chat option
First, what these settings can and cannot do
Turning off training is worth doing. Be realistic about what it does.
- It stops future use. New chats will not be used to train the model.
- It does not undo the past. Data already used for training cannot be pulled back out.
- It does not mean zero storage. Companies still keep chats for a while to run the service and for safety checks, even when training is off.
So these controls reduce your exposure. They do not make a chatbot a vault. The lessons on what not to share still matter.
ChatGPT
To stop training, open ChatGPT, click your profile icon, then go to Settings and Data Controls. Turn off the toggle named Improve the model for everyone. On personal free, Plus, and Pro accounts this is usually on by default, so you have to switch it off yourself.
To manage history, the same Data Controls area lets you clear your conversations. You can delete chats one by one from the sidebar too.
For a one-off private chat, use Temporary Chat. Open a new chat and tap the button near the top of the screen to switch it on. A temporary chat does not show up in your history, does not update the memory, and is not used to train the model. For safety reasons the company may still keep a copy for a short period, commonly up to 30 days, before deleting it.
Gemini
Google groups this under your account activity, not inside the Gemini app menu. Go to myactivity.google.com/product/gemini in a browser where you are signed in.
Look for the Keep Activity card near the top. This is the setting that was previously called Gemini Apps Activity. Turn it off to stop new conversations being saved to your activity and sampled for human review.
On the same page you can set Auto-delete. The default is often 18 months. You can shorten it, and the shortest option is usually 3 months. There is also a control to delete past activity right away.
One honest caveat. Even with Keep Activity off, Google keeps recent chats for a short window, commonly up to 72 hours, to run the service. And a conversation that a reviewer already picked up stays in that process.
Claude
In Claude, click your name or profile in the corner, open Settings, then find the Privacy section. Look for a toggle named Help improve Claude. If it is on, your chats can be used to improve the model. Turn it off if you do not want that.
There is a real difference in how long chats are kept. When the improve setting is on, chats can be retained for a longer period. When it is off, you are on the shorter standard retention. Turning the toggle off both stops training and shortens how long your chats are stored.
Claude also offers an Incognito chat option for sensitive conversations. An incognito chat is not used to improve the model, even if your main setting is on. It is the quick way to have a one-time private conversation without changing your account settings.
A note that applies to all three
Even with every training toggle off, a chat that gets flagged by the tool's safety systems can still be reviewed by a person. That is how these companies catch abuse. It is a good thing overall, but it means "training off" is not the same as "no human will ever see this." The takeaway is the same as the last lesson. The strongest privacy move is to not paste the sensitive thing in the first place.
Do this now
Take three minutes and set all three, even for tools you rarely use.
- In each tool you use, find the training toggle and turn it off.
- Set auto-delete where the tool offers it.
- Learn where the temporary or incognito option is, so you can reach for it when a chat is sensitive.
You will repeat this as a checklist in the final capstone lesson, so you do not have to memorize it now.
Key Takeaways
- ChatGPT: Settings, then Data Controls, then turn off "Improve the model for everyone." Use Temporary Chat for one-off private chats.
- Gemini: go to myactivity.google.com/product/gemini, turn off "Keep Activity," and shorten Auto-delete.
- Claude: Settings, then Privacy, then turn off "Help improve Claude." Use Incognito for sensitive chats.
- Turning off training stops future use, but does not erase past training data or stop all short-term storage.
- Menus change often. Look for "data," "privacy," "activity," or "improve the model" if a label has moved.
