Perplexity Free vs Pro vs Max: What You Actually Get (2026)
Perplexity has three plans for individuals: Free ($0), Pro ($20/month), and Max ($200/month). Free gives you cited web answers with tight limits. Pro raises every limit and adds model choice, Deep Research, premium data sources, and app connectors. Max is for people who run long research and agent jobs every day.

The "10x" and "5x" labels come straight from Perplexity's own plan table. Perplexity does not publish the base numbers behind them, so read them as "a lot more than Pro" rather than an exact count.
What the Free Plan Gives You
The free plan is a search engine that writes a short answer and shows its sources. For quick questions, that is often all you need.
What you get for free
- Cited answers. Every answer has inline citations you can click and check.
- Basic AI models. Perplexity picks the model for you. Its pricing FAQ says free users also get access to top models with "limited weekly usage."
- Limited file uploads so you can ask questions about a PDF or image.
- Limited asset generation, such as a simple document.
- Comet Assistant, the AI helper inside Perplexity's Comet browser.
- Limited Comet Agent use for small browser tasks.
What you do not get
- You cannot choose which model answers.
- No app connectors, so Perplexity cannot search your email, drive, or other apps.
- No premium data sources.
- No video generation.
- No Perplexity Computer, the agent that builds documents, sites, and small apps for you.
The free limits
Perplexity does not publish exact daily or weekly numbers for the free plan anymore. The pricing page only says "good for limited daily usage" and "better for simple questions." Older guides, including some of ours, quote a fixed number of Pro Searches per day. Treat those numbers as out of date. The app shows you when you are close to a limit.
What Pro Adds
Pro costs $20/month, or about $17/month if you pay for a year. Perplexity describes it as "better answers, more answers." Its FAQ says Pro "raises every limit" compared with Free.
Pro features
- Model choice. You can pick a preferred model per question. Perplexity says it works with models from OpenAI (ChatGPT), Google (Gemini), Anthropic (Claude), and NVIDIA (Nemotron), plus its own fast Sonar model.
- Deep Research. Longer, multi-step research that reads many sources and writes a report.
- Premium data sources such as PitchBook, Statista, and S&P Capital IQ. This matters most for finance and market research.
- 400+ app connectors, so answers can pull from your files and work apps as well as the web.
- Document and app creation. Perplexity can turn research into polished documents and simple apps.
- Video generation.
- More memory, so Perplexity keeps more context about you across chats.
- Perplexity Computer with 4,000 bonus credits. Pro does not include a monthly credit refill in the plan table, so once the bonus is gone you would need more credits for heavy agent use.
A note on Model Council
Model Council asks several models the same question and compares their answers. Perplexity's FAQ lists it as a Pro feature, but the plan table only ticks it for Max, and the Max FAQ talks about "several Model Council runs per month." Expect limited or no access on Pro, and check the app for your account.
Promotions
At the time of checking, the Pro page showed a limited-time offer of extra Computer credits. Offers like this come and go, so do not base your decision on them.
What Max Adds
Max costs $200/month, or about $167/month if billed yearly. Perplexity calls it the plan for "heavy, sustained work."
- Perplexity Computer at full scale: 10,000 credits every month plus 35,000 bonus credits.
- Advanced reasoning models for deep investigations and large datasets.
- 10x web answers, file uploads, asset generation, and Comet Agent use in the plan table.
- 5x video generation.
- Model Council and Brain, which are ticked only for Max.
- Advanced models inside Comet Assistant.
- Priority access to new features.
Max makes sense if Perplexity is a daily work tool and you run agent tasks through Computer. For most people who ask questions and read sources, Max is far more than they need.
Perplexity also sells Enterprise Pro and Enterprise Max plans for teams, with admin and security controls. Those are outside the scope of this post.
Free vs Pro: The Real Differences
If you are deciding between Free and Pro, these are the changes you will feel most:
- You stop hitting walls. Free is fine for a few questions a day. If you research for work or study, you will reach the limits quickly.
- You can pick the model. Some models are better at writing, others at reasoning. On Free, Perplexity decides.
- Deep Research becomes usable. On Free it is limited. On Pro you can run it as part of normal work.
- Your own data joins the search. Connectors let Perplexity search your files and apps alongside the web.
- Paid data sources. If you need market sizes, company data, or funding numbers, Pro opens sources that are normally behind paywalls.

Here is a simple way to decide.
Stay on Free if
- You use Perplexity a few times a day as a better search engine.
- You mostly ask short, factual questions.
- You already pay for another AI tool (ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini) that has its own web search.
- You are a student on a tight budget. Free covers most homework lookups.
Upgrade to Pro if
- You hit the free limits at least a few times a week.
- You write reports, market research, or literature reviews and need Deep Research often.
- You want to choose between top models without paying for several separate subscriptions.
- You need premium sources like PitchBook or Statista for your job.
- You want Perplexity to search your own files and apps, not only the web.
Consider Max only if
- Perplexity is your main work tool and you run long agent jobs with Computer.
- You regularly run out of Pro limits on Deep Research or file uploads.
- The $200/month cost is small next to the time it saves you, or your employer pays.
A simple test: use Free for two weeks. Count how often you see a limit message. If it happens a few times a week and it slows real work, Pro is worth $20. If it rarely happens, keep your money.

- Ask one clear question at a time. Short, specific questions use fewer resources and get cleaner answers.
- Save Deep Research for questions that need it. For a quick fact, a normal search is enough.
- Name the kind of source you want. Add "use academic papers" or "use official sources" to your question.
- Open the sources. Skim the top two or three citations before you trust a number.
- Pair tools. Use Perplexity to find sources, then paste the key points into another free AI tool to write or summarize.
