None of these tell Claude who the reader is, what tone to use, what specific claims to make, or what action the reader should take. The output will be generic because the input is generic.
The Draft-Review-Revise Cycle
The most effective content workflow with Claude is iterative. Treat the first output as a structured draft, not a final product.
Step 1 — Draft with constraints:
Write a 400-word blog post introduction for [topic]. Audience: [describe audience]. Tone: [describe tone]. The introduction should open with a specific scenario, not a generalization. End with a clear thesis statement.
Step 2 — Review with criteria:

Documentation: Specify the reader's assumed knowledge level, the task they are trying to complete, and whether to use imperative mood ("Click Save" not "You can click Save").
Marketing copy: Specify the channel, the one action you want the reader to take, any constraints (character limits, required phrases), and what objections the copy should preempt.
Social media: Specify the platform, character limit, tone relative to platform norms, whether to include a call-to-action, and whether hashtags are wanted.
Iterative Refinement Patterns
When a draft is close but not right, be surgical with your revision prompts. Telling Claude "make it better" produces marginal improvements. Instead, identify the specific dimension that needs work:
- Tone: "The current draft sounds too formal for our audience. Rewrite paragraphs 2 and 3 in a more conversational tone, as if explaining this to a colleague over coffee."
- Specificity: "Replace every general claim in this draft with a concrete example or statistic. Where you do not have a specific example, note [EXAMPLE NEEDED] so I can fill it in."
- Length: "This draft is 600 words. Cut it to 400 by removing filler sentences and consolidating repeated points. Do not remove any concrete examples."
- Structure: "Restructure this as a listicle: a short intro, five numbered points each with a subheader and two sentences, and a one-sentence conclusion."
