How Large Language Models Work (the Advisor-Friendly Version)
Tools like ChatGPT (built on OpenAI's GPT models), Claude (from Anthropic), and Gemini (from Google) are large language models, or LLMs. They were trained on an enormous amount of text — books, websites, articles, documentation — and during training they learned the statistical patterns of language: which words and ideas tend to follow which. When you type a prompt, the model generates a response one piece at a time, each time predicting the most likely next piece given everything before it.
Three consequences of this matter enormously for financial advisors:
- They are pattern matchers, not databases. An LLM has read a lot about retirement planning, Roth conversions, and the 4% rule, but it does not have your client's actual account balances, your firm's model portfolios, or today's market prices unless you provide them. It is not connected to your custodian or your CRM.
- They can be confidently wrong. This is called hallucination. Ask an LLM for "the 2026 IRA catch-up contribution limit" or "the rule of 55 details" and it may produce a precise-sounding number that is out of date or simply invented. The writing quality does not change when the facts are wrong.
- They reflect their training cutoff. A model trained on data through, say, 2024 will not know about a tax law passed in 2025 unless it has a live web-browsing feature turned on. Even then, treat current-events answers as leads to verify, not citations.
None of this makes LLMs useless for advisors. It means you use them for what they are good at — language, structure, summarization, drafting — and you keep a licensed human between the AI and anything that matters.
The Tools You'll Actually Use
ChatGPT — The most widely used assistant. The free tier is capable; paid tiers add stronger models, file uploads, image analysis, web browsing, and Custom GPTs (reusable assistants you configure once — covered in Module 4). Great all-rounder for drafting emails, summarizing statements, brainstorming meeting agendas, and explaining concepts in client-friendly language.
Claude — Known for thoughtful, careful writing and a very large context window, meaning you can paste long documents — a 40-page fund prospectus, a full annuity contract, a year of meeting notes — and ask questions across all of it at once. Many advisors prefer Claude for document-heavy work and nuanced client communications.
Google Gemini — Strong all-rounder, tightly integrated with Google Workspace (Gmail, Docs, Sheets), which is convenient if your practice runs on Google. Also good at handling images and longer documents.
Perplexity — A search-first AI that answers questions and cites the web sources it used. This makes it the right tool when you need to check something current — a regulatory update, a fund manager change, a market headline — though you still verify the cited sources yourself.
Microsoft Copilot — If your firm runs on Microsoft 365, Copilot brings AI into Outlook, Word, Excel, and Teams. Useful for advisors whose compliance department has standardized on the Microsoft stack, because data may stay within your tenant.
A practical default: use ChatGPT or Claude for drafting and document work, Perplexity for anything that needs current sources, and whichever your firm has officially approved when client data is involved. We will say much more about that approval question in the compliance lesson.
Where AI Genuinely Helps an Advisor
- Summarizing long documents — turning a dense statement, prospectus, or trust document into a one-page brief
- Meeting preparation — building a tailored agenda and talking points from notes and account data
- Client communications — drafting review-meeting follow-up emails, market-volatility notes, and explanations of complex concepts in plain language
- Commentary — turning portfolio performance numbers into a readable quarterly letter
- Documentation — converting your rough meeting notes into a clean record and a follow-up task list
- Research — getting oriented fast on an unfamiliar product, strategy, or rule before you do the authoritative checking
- Marketing — drafting newsletters, blog posts, seminar outlines, and social content in your voice
Where AI Falls Down
- Current numbers and rules — contribution limits, tax brackets, RMD ages, market data. Always verify against an authoritative source.
- Math under pressure — LLMs can fumble multi-step calculations. Use a real calculator or planning software for anything binding; use AI to explain the result, not produce it.
- Firm- and client-specific facts — it does not know your models, your fee schedule, or this client's situation unless you tell it.
- Judgment and fiduciary responsibility — suitability, the actual recommendation, and "is this the right thing for this person" are yours. AI does not carry your license or your liability.
- Confidentiality — anything you paste may be processed on someone else's servers. The compliance lesson covers exactly how to handle this.
How the Industry Is Using AI in 2026
You are not early to this. Advisor-facing software vendors have embedded AI throughout the stack: CRMs that auto-summarize client interactions, meeting-notetaker tools that produce transcripts and action items, planning platforms that generate plan narratives, and "advisor copilots" that surface talking points before a call. Custodians and broker-dealers are rolling out internal assistants for operations and compliance questions. At the same time, regulators have made clear that "the AI did it" is not a defense — the SEC has scrutinized "AI washing" in marketing, and supervisory obligations apply to AI-assisted work just as they do to a junior employee's work.
