NotebookLM is free to use, and there is no separate NotebookLM subscription. You get higher limits by paying for a Google AI plan: Google AI Plus, Google AI Pro, or Google AI Ultra. The free plan gives you 100 notebooks with up to 50 sources each. Plus doubles most limits, and Pro raises them about four times.

One more thing first. In July 2026, Google renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook. It is the same product, and your notebooks did not change. We use both names in this post because most people still search for NotebookLM.

Important: How Limits Work Since September 2

On September 2, 2026, Google changed how Gemini Notebook counts usage. Chat and Studio outputs now use compute-based limits. A long chat, many sources, or a heavy output like a Video Overview uses more of your limit than a short question.

Here is how it works now:

• Your usage refreshes every 5 hours until you reach a weekly limit.
• Free has "standard" limits. AI Plus is 2x, AI Pro is 4x, and AI Ultra is 5x or 20x higher than AI Pro, depending on the Ultra plan.
• You can check your usage in Settings > Usage.
• If you run out, you can choose Generate later for things like Video Overviews or Slide Decks. They are made when you have limit again. This option is web only for now.

So what about the daily numbers in the table? Google's upgrade page still lists them, and the notebook and source caps still apply. For chats and Studio outputs, treat the daily numbers as a rough guide to the size of each plan, not an exact count.

Ultra is built for people who use Google's AI tools all day for work. Very few NotebookLM users need it for NotebookLM alone.

You can also get higher NotebookLM limits through a qualifying Google Workspace or Workspace for Education license. If your school or company uses Google Workspace, check with your admin before you buy a personal plan. A simple test: use the free plan for two weeks and open Settings > Usage now and then. If you run out often, start with Plus. Move to Pro only when Plus is not enough.

• Keep one notebook per topic. Smaller notebooks with focused sources give better answers and use less compute.
• Remove sources you do not need. More sources mean more work for each question.
• Ask specific questions. "Summarize chapter 3's main argument" is better than "tell me everything."
• Use Generate later on the web when you hit a limit, instead of waiting.
• Pick the right output. A text report or flashcards cost less than a Video Overview.
